A covenant not to compete or a non-compete puts a limitation on an employee when they leave employment with a business owner that they can't work in that industry for a particular period of time and within a particular area, they are not favored in the law. Whether they're enforceable will depend on a variety of considerations and vary from state to state. Before you and you enter into a non-compete or before you ask somebody to enter into a non-compete, you should understand their viability in your state.
